What Is a National Provider Identifier (NPI)?
An NPI is a unique ten-digit identifier assigned to covered healthcare providers in the United States.
An NPI identifies a provider; it does not by itself certify licensure, enrollment, specialty, or current practice status.

- Store the value as a ten-character string - Validate its shape without inventing missing digits - Keep provider entity type and taxonomy as separate fields - Retain the source release that supplied the record
